## Data structure
For long-term preservation, the research data produced within the project are archived via Open Data LMU. This encrypted dataset presents a structural indentical supplement to the publicly available data at: [https://doi.org/10.5282/ubm/data.792](https://doi.org/10.5282/ubm/data.792). It comprises a JSON file containing georeferenced narrative sites and associated structured metadata. In addition, a ZIP archive containing the corresponding photographic documentation and the project bibliography are included.

The research data files (ZIP archives) are password protected and encrypted with AES-256. The password can be obtained by following the instructions in the Data Use Agreement. To extract the data, you will need a compatible program such as 7-Zip (Windows/Linux) or Keka (macOS).

The project data deposited in the Research Data Repository of the University Library of LMU Munich (Open Data LMU) comprise the following components as of 30 March 2026:

* README.txt: (this file)

* DataCite_metadata.xml: XML metadata file conforming to the DataCite schema ([https://schema.datacite.org/meta/kernel-4.4/metadata.xsd](https://schema.datacite.org/meta/kernel-4.4/metadata.xsd))

* archive_protected_encrypted/archive_protected.json: JSON export of the restricted (password-protected) project data. The file contains 28 additional records that are not publicly accessible. Its structure corresponds to archive_public.json. Access is restricted and may be granted upon request in accordance with the Data Use Agreement.

* img_protected_encrypted.zip: Image archive corresponding to the records in archive_protected.json. The archive contains approximately 127 image files (approx. 2 GB). Access to this material is restricted in accordance with the Data Use Agreement.

* Data_Use_Agreement_Strandasögur.pdf: The Data Use Agreement outlines the conditions for using the dataset.
