The term 'repository' has not yet been sufficiently defined, especially its distinction from the term 'archive' is blurred. In the digital world, repositories are basically storage systems intended for the long-term preservation of data. In the scientific realm, repositories are mostly operated by public institutions and the preserved data is predominantly research data. The most important characteristics of a repository are the physical security of the data as well as the preservation of its integrity, the indefinite existence of the institution operating the repository, the documentation of the content, structure and coding of the stored data, and its availability regardless of time and place. For the humanities in Germany, the Clarin-D network and the Textgrid repository currently (2016) play a particularly important role.
VerbaAlpina strives to store each VA version in one or more repositories.
