All of VerbaAlpina's project data is stored in such a way, that it is retrievable and usable for as long as possible. The envisioned perspective spans at least multiple decades, the final aim being the unlimited conservation of the underlying concept.
These specific aspects are being regarded:
1. Which institution(s) will be entrusted with the storage of data and/or data carriers?
2. Documentation of data structure as well as the logical connections between data and data categories (Entity-Relationship)
3. Documentation of the used character encoding(s)
Multiple copies of the project data shall be archived in multiple different institutions. Currently, this task is intended for the IT-group of the humanities at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universtität in Munich [https://www.itg.uni-muenchen.de/index.html], which is connected to the archiving server of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre as well as the BAS Clarin Repository. In addition, the depositing of further backup copies at suitable institutions is planned. Archiving is aligned with the rhythm of versioning. The database with all project data (module VA_DB together with the entity-relation-model) as well as the web framework (VA_WEB) are, respectively, being archived. The latter is responsible for the presentation of the data on the internet (including their respective features) so that the 'revival' of every single version could, at least theoretically, be emulated in a corresponding operating system or software environment. Furthermore, the media library, mainly consisting of photos, films, text and audio documents, is being archived (module VA_MT).
In irregular intervals, the VerbaAlpina website (VA_WEB) will be filed in the internet archive https://archive.org. Earlier versions of VA_WEB can be accessed via https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://verba-alpina.gwi.uni-muenchen.de/. The oldest version on there was saved on 10 November 2014. The archiving is partly automated through the 'Wayback' crawler set up by archive.org. Since 2018, it is also actively carried out by VerbaAlpina during the semi-annual version change.
